There are 5 main principles to Onomy’s work, here they are...
The success of Onomy ministries is largely based upon the strong emphasis on positive relationships between leader-child, child-child, leader-leader, and parents-child-leader. Regular contact and an openness among all parties creates a network of trust. Every effort is made to ensure each participant, be it child, teenager or leader feels at home and accepted.
By working and supplementing each other, the leadership teams create vibrant afternoons together. The afternoons themselves are a time when children are challenged to grow socially, as individuals and together. Through the leaders working as a team and having meetings, meeting socially and living experiences together; many lasting friendships are formed. Through challenges and time together the same can be said about friendships among children. Onomy groups welcome every child and teenager, regardless of race or religion.
The work of Onomy considers the diverse and individual needs of the children and teenagers. The activities are age related, experience orientated, versatile and creative. Children and teenagers are accompanied and supported in their development and their needs and questions are taken seriously. Through the social, emotional, spiritual and practical aspects of Onomy, head, hearts, hands and habits are all addressed.
Onomy is a children’s and youth ministry. However, it is of equal gain and benefit for the leaders and also the local and wider communities. The advantage for the community is amongst others a way of integrating children and young people into the community, growing leaders and teaching them useful skills and to look after the environment. As its a meaningful free-time activity Onomy also helps towards preventing addictions, anti-social behaviour and violence. Additionally the children and young people have the chance to acquire many everyday skills and grow in competence. Teenagers and young adults are especially encouraged to take on responsibility through leadership.
Biblical content and teaching is an important component of each and every Onomy event, be it a Saturday afternoon, special Christmas event, summer camp or training course for leaders. The Bible serves as a strong foundation and standard to live by. The Biblical content stresses salvation and new life through Jesus Christ. Through Onomy young people are encouraged to live with Jesus.
During time spent in Onomy, children and teenagers develop their personality and grow in responsibility. This happens through good role-models, lessons, being together, and through the connection with an evangelical-based church. Leaders will be trained, supported and encouraged through various week long training courses so that they competently and professionally carry out their role as a leader.
